iPhone Out of Storage? Here’s How to Fix it

You don't want to delete apps or erase important data, but you can effectively free up storage by tweaking a few settings. Here are eight ways to free up storage that I've tested and found to work.

Cleaning up unnecessary files and data not only frees up storage space, but also keeps your device performing more smoothly. But you don't have to just delete files blindly. It's much more effective to be organised and take advantage of automatic management features

1️⃣ Clean up unused apps

If you've been using your iPhone for a long time, you're bound to have a lot of unsued apps. Especially large games and editing apps can take up several GB of storage space.

 

How to clean them up

(1) go to Settings > General > iPhone storage

(2) find the apps you don't use and click the Delete App button

(3) Enable Auto Cleanup > Settings > App Store > Enable 'Clean up unused apps'

 

This feature will delete the app itself but preserve the data, so you can reinstall it later and keep your existing settings.

Delete large apps that you don't use often and check if they have cloud capabilities

Use the 'offload' feature to 'offload' apps that you're likely to reinstall instead of deleting them

 

2️⃣ Clean up your Messages app

Did you know that your iPhone's Messages app also takes up a lot of storage space?

Especially if you have a lot of message files with photos and videos, it can eat up your storage faster than you expect.

 

How to clean it up

(1) change the retension period to 30 days or 1 year in Settings > Message > 'Message history retension'

(2) delete unnecessary photos and videos in individual chats

(3) manage attachments - check the list of files in the Messages app and clean them up

Be especially careful in group chats, as they tend to share a lot of photos and videos.

If you have a lot of old chats, you can also delete the chats themselves.

 

3️⃣ Completely Delete Recently Deleted Items

When you delete a photo from your iPhone, it remains in the "Recently Deleted" album for 30 days, which means you haven't actually lost and storage space.

 

How to delete completely

(1) go to the Photos app > Albums > 'Recently Deleted'

(2) click on the 'Delete All' button
